Radio Lollipop

This community-based project was created in response to Radio Lollipop, an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children in hospital through play and entertainment.

The outcome is a series of posters that spell out the word “PLAY”, with each letter or surrounding area being filled with illustrations of children, many of whom represent a range of illnesses and disabilities. Alongside these figures, I included drawings of toys and activities often used by the people that are apart of Radio Lollipop to help highlight play and as a form of distraction for those in hospital.

The direction of this project was strongly influenced by an interview with Hedley Finn, who emphasised that the organisation’s core aim is to centre play as a way of helping children feel less defined by the hospital environments, this idea became the foundation to my work.

Through this project, I wanted to communicate the importance of play as both a form of comfort and a form of escape, creating a series of images that feel inclusive and reflective of the diverse experiences of children in hospital.
